At the beginning of this partnership between Phi Mu Chapter of Sigma and The Student Nurse Project, I’d like to share with everyone President Tigges’ Call to Action: Connect, Collaborate and Catalyse. These link so beautifully with some of the NHS Horizons 30-day challenges and with this partnership in which we plan to host a series of tweet chats, to explore and discuss the wider implications of these topics!
For the first chat, which will be 26th September, in line with the NHS Horizons challenge to add your title and qualification to your social media bio, we’ll be tweeting to connect.
The theme for this tweet chat is “Connect” – Digital competence for connections in nursing.
Nursing, despite being a profession of working alongside people at every stage of their lives, can be lonely. School nurses, district nurses, agency nurses and more: the many and varied faces of nursing are often alone in the crowd. It may even be that you’re the only person in the team with an interest in a certain area, leaving you isolated from your tribe. Digital innovations offer new opportunities for connections. Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook: social media shortens distances, bridges gaps, and levels the playing field.
Even for nurses who don’t feel alone in their role, social media offers the opportunity to make exciting new connections, exchange ideas, be inspired and stay updated on innovations in global healthcare. It is also a simple way of promoting the work we do and raising our profile worldwide. However, many are still uncertain about the benefits of using social media as a nursing professional. Confidentiality concerns aside, technology improves sustainability. For instance, webinars and livestreaming services save on fuel, time and expense when travelling to meetings or events. Just as e-health innovations are on the rise, so we must drive board meetings and other managerial practice online. We have the power at our fingertips, with tools like Zoom and Skype For Business.
